“The Misinformation Apple: How Modern Media Has Impacted My Family and Me”

Ok Ok.

By now you know the dangers of misinformation but do you know how it’s affecting you the people you know and your family’s ability to absorb information on media platforms.

Misinformation in modern media has and continues to have a profound impact on my family and me. We have been inundated with false information, and it has become increasingly difficult to determine what is true and what is not. This has caused us to become increasingly distrustful of the information we receive, and we often second guess our decisions, especially those that involve the government or other institutions. We are also more likely to feel fear and anxiety when we hear news that we cannot verify, leading to a heightened sense of insecurity.

As an African American, growing up in a society and culture still trying to overcome histories of oppression and sociological and generational traumas, overcoming misinformation especially as it pertains to government institutions are extremely hard things to do.

Take pandemic vaccines for example. African American’s were very hesitant in being the first adopters of the quickly developed and undertested Covid-19 vaccines. This was even more so in the older generation who still remembered the Tuskegee Experiments in Alabama. The Tuskegee Experiments were a series of unethical medical studies conducted by the US Public Health Service between 1932 and 1972 on a group of 600 African American men in Tuskegee, Alabama. The men were not told they had syphilis, and were denied access to medical treatment, leading to serious health complications and even death. They continue to serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of misinformation and the importance of truth in the African American community. This example of medical racism and disinformation has had a lasting impact on African Americans’ trust in the institutional systems and highlights the need for accurate and honest information to be shared within the community.

Nowadays, the spread of misinformation has caused us to become more and more isolated from one another. As we can see people are now less likely to engage in meaningful conversations about the news and, as a result, have become more closed-minded and less understanding of one another’s beliefs. This issue has had an incredibly negative impact on my family and me, making us less trusting and more fearful of the information we consume. Even the important things.

It’s sad to think that something as important as climate change is being clouded by misinformation. Despite the overwhelming scientific evidence that climate change is happening, people are still receiving inaccurate information from various sources, leading to confusion and uncertainty. This has made it difficult for people to comprehend the urgency of the situation and has resulted in a lack of necessary action to address this urgent global problem. Instead, they align their views depending on the side of the political aisle they fall under. Conspiracy theorist have run rampant and we find trusting reliable sources of information harder and harder to do.

It is essential that we remain vigilant about the information we consume and work to ensure that it is accurate and reliable. It is also important that we strive to stay open-minded and foster meaningful conversations with one another. Only by doing so can we ensure that we are not being misled by misinformation in modern media. But this isn’t an easy thing to do and isn’t an easy thing to fix. Maybe I’m just being pessimistic or maybe I’m being realistic its harder to trust once we have taken a BYTE of the misinformation apple.
